History

Washington Street was created and given its name on November 5, 1860 at a meeting of the High Point Commissioners. By the year 1960, E. Washington Street's business district consisted of 54 African American businesses covering some nine magnificent blocks.

This cultural icon rose above discrimination, segregation, and racism to become a symbol of black determination, perseverance, and success. In 2010, Washington Street earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places.
